Police Confirm Arrest of Ekiti University Final-Year Student for Alleged Rape of Male Colleague

The Ekiti State police have confirmed the arrest of Olalekan Oni, a final-year student at the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), who allegedly raped a male colleague.

The Ekiti State police have confirmed the arrest of Olalekan Oni, a final-year student at the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), on charges of allegedly raping a male colleague.

Known as Asiwaju, Oni, a Criminology student, recently presented his research project on “Causes and Youth Involvement in Criminal Activity: A Case Study of Oye Local Government Area.”

In a widely shared video on Tuesday, the suspect was seen wearing a shirt and shorts, being escorted by police through a crowd.

The National Association of Ondo State Students clarified in a statement that Oni is not a member or affiliated with their union. Signed by union president ADEYEMI Temitope Festus, the statement read, “We want to clarify that the individual, Oni Olalekan, popularly known as Asiwaju, accused of sexual assault, is not a member, an executive, or an appointee of our association. It is important to ensure that this distinction is clear to the general public and that any misinformation is addressed promptly. We take these matters very seriously and stand for a safe and inclusive environment for all our members. If you have any concerns or information, please do not hesitate to reach out to the association board. Let’s continue to uphold our values and principles as we strive for a respectful and supportive community within our association.”

Similarly, the FUOYE Student Union distanced itself from Oni in their own statement, which read, “Disclaimer. This is to inform the general public that Oni Olalekan, popularly known as Asiwaju, is not a member of the Students’ Union Government nor is he an appointee of the Students’ Union Government. Any claims or assumptions to the contrary are incorrect. Please take note and disregard any misinformation. Please be assured that the FUOYESUG is actively addressing this matter and will take all necessary actions to ensure that justice is served. Thank you.”

Ekiti State Police Command spokesperson, Abutu Sunday, confirmed the arrest, noting that Oni has denied the allegations. “Investigation has commenced. The suspect has been arrested, and investigations are ongoing because he denies the allegations made by the complainant. We will await the results of the investigation,” Sunday stated.
