Police in Imo State have launched a search operation for a 17-year-old student of Federal University of Technology, Owerri who was kidnapped along the FUTO–Ihiagwa Road, with intensified security efforts to ensure her rescue and arrest the suspects.

A 17-year-old student of Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Mary Uzoma, has been reportedly kidnapped by suspected herdsmen along the FUTO–Ihiagwa Road in Owerri West, Imo State, sparking fear among students living off-campus.

The Imo State Police Command confirmed the incident and said a coordinated search and rescue operation is already underway. Police spokesperson Henry Okoye stated that officers, working with local vigilantes, immediately combed nearby bushes and surrounding areas after receiving the report.

The Commissioner of Police, Audu Bosso, has directed the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Owerri to take over the case and intensify intelligence-driven efforts alongside other security agencies to secure the victim’s safe return and apprehend those responsible.

Security has also been strengthened across the FUTO axis and neighboring communities, with increased patrols and surveillance. Authorities have urged students and residents to remain calm but vigilant, while encouraging the public to provide any useful information to the nearest police station.

The police reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
