A Plateau State High Court sentenced Sgt. Ruya Auta to death for the 2020 killing of UNIJOS student Rinji Bala, marking a major step toward accountability for unlawful violence by security personnel.

A Plateau State High Court has delivered judgment in the widely followed case involving the killing of University of Jos student, Rinji Bala, marking the end of a lengthy pursuit of justice.
On Tuesday, Chief Justice of Plateau, Justice David Mann, ruled that Sgt. Ruya Auta be sentenced to death by hanging or lethal injection after finding him guilty of culpable homicide. The judgment came after a thorough review of evidence presented by the prosecution and testimonies from key witnesses.
The court noted that the ruling was intended to reinforce accountability, particularly in cases of unlawful firearm use by security personnel. Many observers across the state have welcomed the verdict as a crucial move toward restoring trust in the justice system.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the victim, 300-level student Rinji Bala, was killed on May 12, 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown. Bala and two friends were stopped, searched, and taken into custody near the Hwolshe area of Jos despite no incriminating evidence being found. After being beaten and released, they were ordered to run, and Auta shot Bala in the back, killing him instantly.
Public outrage over the incident has persisted for years, with continuous calls for justice on behalf of Bala’s family. The court’s decision is seen as a major step in confronting unlawful violence by security agents and upholding citizens’ rights.
Lead prosecutor Dr Garba Pwul (SAN), who represented the state on a fiat from the Attorney General, said justice had been served. He explained that although the convict claimed the shooting was accidental, the prosecution demonstrated intent, noting that Bala was shot from behind.
When asked about the possibility of an appeal, Pwul said the convict has the constitutional right to file one, but no notice of appeal had been received yet.
Reacting to the judgment, Peter Bala, the father of the deceased, said that while no one rejoices over another person’s death, the law must run its course. He expressed hope that the verdict would deter other security operatives from negligence and abuse of power.
