Prepare for a Full-scale Strike — ASUU Tells FG

ASUU has warned the Nigerian Government of Imminent Strike by its members over the failure of the Federal Government to uphold their agreement.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that its members are close to initiating a full-scale strike due to the federal government’s failure to uphold agreements with the union.

The union highlighted issues with the Integrated Personnel Payment Information System (IPPIS), stating that some individuals exploiting this system are ignoring the Federal Executive Council’s (FEC) directive to exclude ASUU from the platform. Instead of adopting the Union’s proposed University Transparency Accountability Solutions (UTAS), the government introduced the Government Integrated Financial Management System (GIFMIS).

Addressing the media in Makurdi, Benue State, ASUU-Nsukka Zone Chairman, Comrade Raphael Amokaha, criticized those benefiting from the IPPIS for resisting the transition to UTAS. He urged the government to identify and hold accountable those hindering this change.

ASUU also expressed frustration over the government’s failure to release eight months of withheld salaries, pay Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), and fulfill other financial obligations. They acknowledged the reconstitution of University Governing Councils but condemned the premature dissolution of some councils before their terms ended.

The union noted that the government has neglected the 2009 Agreement made through collective bargaining, despite multiple negotiation attempts. ASUU urged President Tinubu to prevent the impending strike by signing and implementing the draft agreement promptly.

Lastly, ASUU called for increased funding for both federal and state universities, advocating that at least 26 percent of annual budgets be allocated to education, as recommended by UNESCO.
