The death of a 400-level UNIOSUN Law student triggered outrage from NANS over alleged healthcare failures, prompting Governor Ademola Adeleke to order a comprehensive review of medical services across the university’s campuses.

The death of a final-year student of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Osunlakin Grace, has sparked grief and widespread concern among students and education stakeholders. Grace, a 400-level Law student, reportedly passed away after failing to receive urgent medical attention, leading to allegations that inadequate healthcare facilities at the university’s Ifetedo campus contributed to the tragedy.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) expressed sadness over the incident and extended condolences to the deceased student’s family, friends, and colleagues. NANS President Babatunde Akinteye described the loss as avoidable and argued that it exposed serious shortcomings in the university’s healthcare system. He stated that students deserve access to quality medical services since healthcare forms part of the services covered by their school fees.
According to NANS, the campus clinic lacked essential drugs, equipment, and facilities needed to provide emergency treatment. The association questioned why such deficiencies allegedly persisted and called on the university management to explain the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. It also demanded a transparent investigation and urged authorities to engage with the bereaved family.
As part of its demands, NANS called for the temporary closure of the Ifetedo campus until adequate medical facilities and emergency response systems are put in place. The student body maintained that such action would help prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety and wellbeing of students across the campus.
Reacting to the development, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased student as well as the university community. He appealed for calm among students and residents, urging everyone to allow the relevant authorities to investigate the matter peacefully without escalating tensions.
The governor further directed the state Ministry of Education and the university management to carry out a comprehensive review of healthcare services across all UNIOSUN campuses. The review will focus on emergency response mechanisms, medical equipment, and students’ access to prompt treatment. Adeleke reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare services in state-owned tertiary institutions and prayed for the peaceful repose of Grace’s soul.
