After working his Burger King shift in full graduation attire right after high school, 18-year-old Mykale Baker from Georgia went viral for his dedication and was rewarded with over $22,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to support his dream of attending technical college.

Mykale Baker, an 18-year-old from Georgia, made headlines after he chose duty over celebration, heading straight to his shift at Burger King just hours after graduating from Mills Creek High School. Still dressed in his graduation cap, stole, and medals, Mykale quietly stepped behind the counter to begin taking orders during the evening rush, determined to support himself despite the significance of the day.
His quiet act of perseverance didn’t go unnoticed. Maria Mendoza, a customer who had just attended her daughter’s graduation from the same school, was deeply moved by what she witnessed. She recorded a short TikTok video of Mykale working in his graduation attire and shared it online, praising his humility, strength of character, and work ethic.
The video quickly captured the hearts of thousands, going viral across social media platforms. Inspired by the overwhelming public support and determined to help him further, Mendoza launched a GoFundMe campaign with the goal of raising funds for Mykale’s education.
Within just a few days, the campaign surpassed expectations, raising over $22,000 in donations from people all over the country. On May 26, Mendoza returned to Burger King to personally deliver the news. Surrounded by coworkers and loved ones, Mykale broke down in tears, hugging Mendoza and his mother in an emotional moment of gratitude and disbelief.
“I never thought this would happen to me. I’m so thankful,” he said through tears, visibly overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers.
Faced with financial hardship, Mykale had originally considered taking a gap year after high school. But thanks to the unexpected support, he now plans to enroll in technical college where he hopes to build a career in mechanical engineering or skilled trades—fields he has long been passionate about.
His story is now inspiring thousands of students and young people across the U.S., proving that hard work, humility, and perseverance can open doors, even when the odds seem stacked against you.
