President Bola Ahmed Tinubu dissolved the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University and dismissed key officials, citing procedural violations, while also removing the Pro-Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, for governance breaches, emphasizing adherence to educational standards.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dissolved the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, and dismissed its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh, alongside the Registrar, Mrs. Rosemary Ifeoma Nwokike.
The announcement, made by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, cited procedural violations in the Vice-Chancellor’s appointment as the primary reason for the decision.
The Governing Council, chaired by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, was accused of bypassing established protocols to appoint an unqualified candidate. The council included members such as Hafiz Oladejo, Augustine Onyedebelu, Engr. Amioleran Osahon, and Rtd. Gen. Funsho Oyeneyin.
According to the statement, the Federal Government stepped in following tensions between the university’s Senate and the council. Concerns were raised over the council’s disregard for university governance laws, prompting the dissolution to restore order in the 33-year-old institution.
In a separate development, President Tinubu approved the removal of Engr. Ohieku Muhammed Salami as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO), Benue State. Salami was accused of unlawfully suspending the university’s Vice-Chancellor and refusing to comply with directives from the Federal Ministry of Education to reverse the suspension.
The government also condemned Salami’s alleged abusive and threatening behavior towards ministry officials, emphasizing the need for university councils to adhere strictly to their governing mandates.
President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to raising education standards nationwide and warned against actions that disrupt the smooth functioning of universities. He stressed the importance of adhering to governance laws to ensure stability and progress in higher education institutions.
