Two Students Killed in Ondo Crash; Driver Arrested

Two students from Federal Polytechnic, Ile-Oluji, were killed in a motorcycle collision with a speeding car on the Akure-Ondo Expressway, leading to the driver’s arrest by Ondo State Police.

The Ondo State Police Command announced on Thursday that they have apprehended a driver, whose identity has not been revealed, involved in a fatal accident that claimed the lives of two students from the Federal Polytechnic, Ile-Oluji.

The tragic crash occurred on the Akure-Ondo Expressway in the Olokuta community of Akure South Local Government Area.

The victims, Chukwu Athanasius and Oladokun Oyindamola, were reportedly riding a motorcycle when a speeding Toyota Camry collided with them, resulting in their immediate deaths.

Confirming the arrest, Police Public Relations Officer Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami stated that the suspect is currently in custody, and the bodies of the deceased have been taken to a morgue. “The corpses of the victims have been deposited at the morgue, while the driver of the vehicle is already in police custody,” she said.

Mr. Samuel Ibitoye of the Ondo Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps suggested that the crash was likely due to excessive speed and improper overtaking. He explained, “The crash occurred at the Best Solution Polytechnic area on Ondo Road. A red motorbike was involved in a head-on collision involving three people, and two of them died immediately. The probable cause of the crash was speeding and wrong overtaking.”

Ibitoye stressed the need for road users to practice patience and adhere to traffic rules.

In response to the tragedy, the National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Council, Ondo State Chapter, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a significant blow to the student community. The statement was jointly signed by Oluwarotimi Tobiloba Joshua, Oluwanishola Ajibola, and Kehinde Blessing, who serve as the chairman, general secretary, and public relations officer of the association, respectively.
