Students at the University of Ibadan have launched a new protest against a recent school fee hike approved by the governing council, demanding a reversal of the decision and threatening to boycott classes until their demands are met.

Students at the University of Ibadan have initiated a new protest in response to the recent increase in school fees, which was approved by the university’s governing council.
This protest follows a circular issued on Thursday by G.O. Saliu, the council’s secretary, confirming the council’s approval.
According to PUNCH, the circular mentioned that the governing council had “reviewed and approved the revised schedule of levies for newly admitted and returning undergraduate students for the 2023/2024 academic session as recommended by the university Senate.”
The circular also stated, “Students who have not yet paid and completed their registration are advised to do so by Wednesday, September 4, 2024, to allow departments to download lists of registered students in preparation for the first semester examinations.”
In reaction, students have voiced their discontent by gathering in large numbers from their hostels, chanting solidarity slogans as they march across the campus.
Additionally, the University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UISU), in the early hours of August 30th, released a 7-point resolution in response to the Governing Council’s decision.
This resolution demands the reversal of the fee hike and the immediate shutdown of the school fees payment portal within 24 hours. The Union also called for a complete boycott of classes until their demands are met.
