A Nigerian student in the UK, Onyinye, had her visa revoked and was ordered to leave the country after unknowingly exceeding her 20-hour work limit following her sponsor father’s death, sparking mixed reactions online.

A Nigerian student in the United Kingdom, identified as Onyinye, has had her visa revoked after violating the conditions of her student permit by working more than the allowed 20 hours per week.
In an emotional video shared online, Onyinye revealed that she arrived in the UK in 2022 to pursue a bachelor’s degree. However, her circumstances changed drastically in 2023 after the death of her father, who had been sponsoring her education. Left without financial support, she began working more hours to cover her tuition and living expenses.
Unaware that she had exceeded the 20-hour limit, Onyinye was later contacted by the UK Home Office, which informed her that her visa had been cancelled for breaching immigration rules and instructed her to leave the country.
In tears, she described her three-year journey as painful and disappointing, stating:
“A journey of 3 years…a journey I wanted to celebrate so much. I’ve been in the UK for 3 years. I came in 2022. It’s been hell… In 2023, my dad passed away. He was my sponsor. I was left in a state of nowhere. Nobody to run to…”
The incident has sparked mixed reactions online. While some sympathize with her struggle, others argue that visa regulations are clear and must be followed regardless of personal hardship.
The video has gone viral, drawing attention to the challenges international students face when financial circumstances change during their studies abroad.
