A Nigerian woman, Akano Abisola Elizabeth, who withdrew from Obafemi Awolowo University after her CGPA fell below 1.0, defied the odds by starting afresh at the University of Lagos, where she graduated with a first-class honours degree in Education Economics and emerged as one of the institution’s best graduating students.

A Nigerian woman, Akano Abisola Elizabeth, has inspired many after graduating with a first-class honours degree from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), years after she was forced to withdraw from the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) due to poor academic performance.
Abisola shared her remarkable academic comeback while celebrating her convocation on Facebook, where she also posted photos from her graduation photoshoot and reflected on her challenging journey.
She revealed that she was advised to withdraw from OAU in 2018 after her cumulative grade point average (CGPA) dropped below 1.0, an experience she described as deeply painful and confusing, especially because she had always believed she was academically capable.
According to her, the setback left her depressed and uncertain about her future in higher education. However, with encouragement and support from her family, she decided not to give up on her dreams.
In 2019, Abisola retook the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and secured admission to study Education Economics at UNILAG. Determined to rewrite her story, she committed herself fully to her studies and resolved never to fail again.
Her hard work paid off. Abisola graduated with an impressive 4.91 CGPA, earning a first-class honours degree. She also emerged as the Best Graduating Student in her department and the Second Best Graduating Student in the Faculty of Education, placing her among the top-performing students in the university.
Sharing her story, she wrote that she never scored below a B in any course throughout her time at UNILAG and credited God, discipline, and resilience for her transformation from a dropout to a top graduate.
Following her post, many Nigerians took to social media to celebrate her achievement, praising her determination, courage, and refusal to let early failure define her future.
Her story has since gone viral, serving as a powerful reminder that academic setbacks do not mark the end of success, but can instead become the foundation for an extraordinary comeback.
