UNILAG Law Graduate Dies One Day After Convocation

Maryam Agoro, a UNILAG Law graduate from the class of 2023, has died just one day after participating in the university’s 56th convocation ceremony, a tragedy that has deeply saddened her family, friends, and the UNILAG community.

A young Law graduate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Maryam Agoro, has passed away barely one day after taking part in her convocation ceremony, throwing her family, friends, and classmates into deep sorrow. The sad news surfaced on social media after a user identified as @plantcodesss shared the news on X.

Agoro, a member of the University of Lagos graduating class of 2023, had participated in the 2024/2025 convocation ceremony held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at the school premises. The event brought together students who had completed their studies, marking the university’s 56th convocation ceremony, with 16,506 graduates receiving degrees, including 272 with first-class honors.

In her post, @plantcodesss spoke about Agoro’s strength and the way she inspired people around her, even while facing health struggles in the past. She recalled how Agoro’s sister, Evidence, had always supported her and believed she would recover after seeing her in a poor condition some time ago.

The social media user wrote: “You did your convocation yesterday and today you’re no more. You deserve to be celebrated and you will be. My sister, Evidence was always rooting for you and after seeing you in that miserable condition the last time, I hoped you’d get better. I know you’re smiling from where you are because ‘UNILAG didn’t end you.’ You ended UNILAG, in joy”.

Friends, former classmates, and members of the UNILAG community shared messages of sympathy and prayers, describing the death as painful and shocking. An X user, @Coachchair007, prayed for Agoro’s soul to rest in peace, saying “May Allah forgive her shortcomings and grant her loved ones the fortitude to bear this great loss”.

The University of Lagos community has expressed heartfelt condolences to the Agoro family, highlighting the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing moments of celebration and achievement.
