UNILAG Sets Record with 18 All-Female First-Class Graduates in Mass Communication


The University of Lagos (UNILAG) made history at its 55th Convocation by celebrating 18 all-female first-class graduates in Mass Communication, alongside notable advancements in academic excellence, innovation, and infrastructure.


The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has achieved a historic milestone as its Department of Mass Communication produced 18 all-female first-class graduates for the 2023/2024 academic session.

This groundbreaking accomplishment was celebrated during the university’s 55th Convocation ceremony, where Vice Chancellor Folasade Ogunsola also highlighted the institution’s strides in innovation, infrastructure, and academic excellence.

The announcement was made during the conferment of first-degree honors on Tuesday. A total of 16,590 students are graduating from UNILAG this session, including 9,865 first-degree and diploma recipients, 6,659 postgraduate awardees, and 66 graduates from the UNILAG Business School (ULBS).

Inspiring Journeys of Success

Several graduates shared their personal stories of overcoming challenges:

Peace Onuoha initially aspired to study law but resolved to achieve a first-class degree in Mass Communication. Despite balancing multiple responsibilities, she excelled academically and secured an internship at a multinational company.

Temiloluwa Igbinlade faced difficulties transitioning from secondary school to university but credited her faith and determination for her success.

Eunice Obidi emphasized discipline and time management as key factors in her academic achievements.

Other Convocation Highlights

The convocation also recognized Christian Uwagwu as the best graduating student in the Faculty of Education with a CGPA of 4.78, and Ibrahim Sefiu as the top graduate in the Faculty of Social Sciences with a CGPA of 4.82.

Vice Chancellor Folasade Ogunsola praised the university’s advancements, including:

• The establishment of the MED-AFRICA GMP Laboratory within the Faculty of Pharmacy, a $450,000 facility for HIV prevention research.

• The inauguration of the African Centre of Excellence for Drug Research, Herbal Medicine Development, and Regulatory Science (ACEDHARS), funded by the World Bank, focusing on indigenous plant-based medicine.

• The launch of the Green Air Initiative, introducing eight electric buses to enhance campus transportation.

Additionally, significant donations such as Tunde Fanimokun’s N14.5 billion pledge for hostels and research centers, alongside projects from the Lagos State Government, promise to transform the university’s landscape.

This landmark achievement underscores UNILAG’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation, setting a benchmark for future generations.
