University Ends Lecturers’ Textbook Sales, Gender Specifications in Exams

Cursory: The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has taken measures to eliminate certain practices, including the sale of textbooks by lecturers and gender differentiation on exam scripts. The academic calendar for the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 semesters has also been adjusted.

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) Administration, in collaboration with the Committee of Provost and Deans (CPD), has implemented measures to cease certain practices within the university.

The CPD has prohibited lecturers from selling textbooks and other study materials. Additionally, the CPD has eliminated the practice of indicating gender on examination scripts, both during and after the exam period.

These changes were communicated in a memorandum signed by Dr. Gloria Chindah, the school’s registrar. Dr. Chindah highlighted that this resolution was adopted during the CPD’s 410th emergency meeting on August 4, as part of the institution’s commitment to eradicating all forms of gender discrimination.

The statement reads in part: “At its 410 Emergency Meeting held on Friday, August 4, 2023, at the Council Chambers, Senate Building, University Park, the Committee of Provost and Deans (CPD) considered and decided All examinations must return to status quo, no more gender separation during examinations.

“All forms of gender discrimination are hereby abolished.“No marking of “F” and “M” on examination answer booklets.

“Abolishment of sales of books by course lecturers through Course representatives. No attachment of assignments on purchase of textbooks, workbooks, and manuals.”

Chindah indicated that the Committee decided to prolong the academic calendar for the first semester of both the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 sessions, concluding on August 7, 2023.

Subsequently, the second semester for the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 sessions is scheduled to commence on August 27, 2023.
