US Vice President Advocates Deportation of Foreign Students on Visas

US Vice President J.D. Vance has proposed deporting foreign students on visas if deemed not in the country’s best interest, citing national security concerns and the impact on American students’ access to elite universities.

United States Vice President J.D. Vance has suggested that foreign students on visas could face deportation if their presence is deemed not to be in the country’s best interest.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News on Thursday, Vance emphasized that this proposal aligns with broader deportation efforts under the Trump administration. He stated that while some may argue the issue relates to free speech, it is primarily a matter of national security and determining who is permitted to be part of the American community.

“If the Secretary of State and the President decide a person shouldn’t be in America, and they have no legal right to stay, it’s as simple as that,” Vance asserted, adding that while the exact number of affected students is unclear, an increase in deportations is expected.

Beyond national security concerns, Vance also raised the issue of foreign students occupying spots at elite universities, arguing that many wealthy international applicants—particularly from China—secure admissions at prestigious institutions like Harvard and Columbia, thereby limiting opportunities for qualified American students, especially those from middle-class backgrounds.

“A lot of these foreign students, most of them, pay full tuition. So sometimes, at elite universities, a well-qualified middle-class American kid from the heartland loses out because a Chinese oligarch, paying $100,000 a year, takes that spot,” he said.

He described the trend as not only a security risk but also a threat to the American Dream for students striving for top-tier education.

His remarks come as the United States experiences a surge in international student enrollments, with Nigeria ranking as the seventh-largest source of foreign students in the U.S., contributing 20,029 students in the 2023/2024 academic session.
