“We’ll Not Accept Accept Online Medical Degrees Certificates From Ukraine Students” – MCDN
The Association of Provosts of Colleges of Medicine in Nigeria has opposed the order of the House of Representatives asking the Medical and Dentistry Council of Nigeria to accept medical and dental certificates from war-torn Ukraine.
The PUNCH reports that MDCN announced that it would not accept certificates from Ukraine with effect from 2022 until normal academic activities resume in the country.
The council also reiterated that online medical degrees are also not recognised.

The House had in late June called on the council to “allow students in the sixth and final year of their programmes, who have completed their final exams, to register for the MDCN in the country and allow them to prove themselves.”

The House also urged the MDCN to “allow students in the fifth year of their medical programmes in Ukraine to be absorbed into medical schools in Nigerian universities to complete their sixth year.”
But, APCOM, in a statement made available to The PUNCH on Tuesday, noted that MDCN’s position on non-acceptability of online training of doctors by foreign institutions remains the standard, as medicine is both art and science.
The statement read in part, “It is therefore an unhealthy novelty to have foreign institutions train medical doctors via online process and yet it will be canvassed that they should be registered as practitioners and given the opportunity to prove their worth.
“Humans are not guinea pigs, and no medical regulatory council would subscribe to and allow such to happen. APCOM, as an Association of the Chief Medical Trainers of the Nigerian Universities and custodians of medical education in Nigeria, fully aligns herself with the MDCN on this and endorses in totality the stance of the council on this.
“APCOM also wishes to express deep concern and worries on the apparent directive to the MDCN by some stakeholders on returnee medical students from Ukraine acclaimed to be in 600 level, to be registered for the practice of medicine, and those in 500 level or other levels to be sent to continue their training at equivalent levels in Nigerian universities.”
“This again is fundamentally flawed as the reciprocity of the training medical curriculum of such a country has not been established to be in tandem with that of Nigeria medical colleges, and this is not in line with the process of admission into Nigerian universities.”
The association said it is pertinent that the House of Representatives and other stakeholders know that MDCN does not control the admission and placement of medical students into Nigerian universities
