Young Lady Sets Record, First Family Graduate, Top Student at US University

Cursory: The top graduate of Gambling State University, earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a concentration in actuarial science and physics. Achieving a remarkable 3.98 GPA, she became the first in her family to graduate from university and the inaugural actuarial science graduate at the institution. Despite challenges, including financial strain during the COVID-19 pandemic, Donelle persevered with her family’s support and determination.

Donelle E. Roberts has achieved the distinction of being the top graduate of Gambling State University in the United States. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a focus on actuarial science and physics at Gambling State University, marking a significant milestone as the first university graduate in her family’s history.

Additionally, she holds the honor of being the inaugural graduate to complete a degree program with a concentration in actuarial science at the university. Donelle excelled academically, earning recognition as the best graduating student with an impressive 3.98 Grade Point Average.

Reflecting on her achievement in an interview with Dominica News Online, Donelle expressed her pride, not in surpassing her peers, but in bringing pride to her family and herself through her accomplishments.

Donelle stated that her educational journey was not without challenges. She credited much of her success to her sacrifices as well as the support of her parents and siblings.“During the height of the COVID period, I had to spend more time in my room for my safety, this was a frustrating period. It was also tough financially,” she said.

“While I did have a scholarship that paid tuition and boarding, I had to buy my books and necessities, as well, as money to travel back home during the summer and Christmas breaks. I relied on my family a lot and also worked two jobs,” she added.

She said though she loved mathematics, she never considered actuarial science before enrolling at the university. While at the university, Donelle was a member of the school’s Office of Retention, and the International Association of Black Actuaries.

Donelle was actively involved in various organizations during her time at the university, including the International Student Organization, STEM NOLA, National Science Foundation undergraduate research, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and the National Society of Black Engineers.

She received recognition as a Thurgood Marshall College Fund Scholar (2020-2021) and Goldman Sachs HBCU Leadership Scholar (2020). Additionally, Donelle has consistently achieved academic excellence, earning a place on the President’s List every semester since she began her studies at the university.

While she does not plan to pursue a master’s degree immediately, Donelle intends to enroll in actuary certification courses and subsequently take the exams. She aims to make significant contributions to the financial sector in the future.

“That was one of the reasons I chose to focus my area of study in actuarial science. Dominica needs more actuaries and can benefit from having people with this skillset in the banks and other financial institutions,” she said.
