13-Year-Old Girl Dies by Suicide After Bullying and Cheating Accusation

A 13-year-old South African student, Mbali Mlaba, tragically took her own life after enduring bullying and being falsely accused of cheating during a test.

A heartbreaking incident has shaken the community of Vulindlela Primary School after 13-year-old Grade 7 learner, Mbali Mlaba, reportedly died by suicide following ongoing bullying and allegations of cheating during a class test.

According to reports, Mbali had been targeted by a classmate who repeatedly bullied and physically assaulted her, accusing her of cheating. The bullying reportedly continued into the new school term, despite Mbali expressing fear and even requesting a school transfer.

Howard Ndaba, spokesperson for the Free State Department of Education, confirmed the tragic incident and revealed that a note was discovered by Mbali’s mother, explaining the reasons behind her daughter’s distressing decision.

“The learner detailed her fear of a classmate who had assaulted and bullied her in the past. She had even asked to be moved to another school,” said Ndaba.

Ndaba emphasized the department’s concern over the mental health impact of bullying and stated that psycho-social support has already been made available to affected students and educators.

“The department is committed to creating a safe learning environment rooted in kindness, empathy, and respect. We urge parents, learners, and communities to work hand-in-hand in fostering a supportive school culture,” he added.

Ndaba also encouraged anyone facing bullying or emotional struggles to reach out for help.

“If you or someone you know is being bullied or needs support, please contact us. Together, we can create safe and nurturing schools for all.”
