After surviving cancer three times and defying a 4% survival rate, 18-year-old Madison M. graduated high school with a 4.25 GPA and is now headed to UC Berkeley to pursue her dream of advocating for pediatric cancer research.

At just 18 years old, Madison M. from Los Angeles has overcome more challenges than most people face in a lifetime. After surviving cancer three times, she not only defied the odds but graduated from high school with a perfect 4.00 GPA. Now, she’s been accepted into her dream school — the University of California, Berkeley.
Madison’s Journey: Beating Cancer and Breaking Barriers
Madison’s battle began at age 12 when she was diagnosed with Pancreatic Acinar Cell Carcinoma, an extremely rare cancer that affects only 0.19 in a million children. Over the years, she endured:
- Three cancer relapses
- Extensive hospital stays
- Multiple rounds of chemotherapy
- Emotional and physical exhaustion
Doctors gave her less than a 4% chance of survival with each recurrence — but Madison refused to give up.
Despite constant interruptions to her schooling, she remained committed to her education. She studied from hospital beds, worked through pain, and pushed herself harder than most teens ever have to.
By the time she graduated, not only had she caught up, but she had exceeded all expectations, earning a 4.25 GPA.
Looking Ahead: UC Berkeley and Advocacy
Now four years cancer-free, Madison is starting the next chapter of her journey at UC Berkeley. She plans to major in a field that will allow her to advocate for pediatric cancer research, using her own experience to support others.
“I’m not just a survivor. I’m a student, a dreamer, and someone who believes the best is yet to come,” she said.
Madison’s story is a powerful reminder of what courage, determination, and resilience can achieve — no matter the odds.
