Buraq Ahmed, an 18-year-old former refugee, has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing a scholarship to study Medicine at the prestigious University of Cambridge.
Originally from Iraq, Ahmed and his grandmother moved to the United Kingdom when he was just three years old for urgent medical treatment for a hip condition.
However, due to the escalating war in Iraq, they were unable to return and were granted refugee status in the UK. Ahmed recounted the challenges they faced, including language barriers upon their arrival in the UK.
Despite the hardships, Ahmed and his grandmother found support from his aunt and uncle, who had settled in Cardiff.
“Initially we were only coming to the UK for a limited time however the Iraq War and ICIS terrorism attacks meant we couldn’t go back. As a child, you don’t realize the trauma you and your family are going through and I was fortunate that my grandmother was always there for me,” he said.
He attended a comprehensive school in Cardiff, where he initially pursued his passion for football but had to give it up due to his worsening hip condition. With a newfound focus on academics, Ahmed excelled in his studies and earned a scholarship to Cardiff Sixth Form College.
At the college, Ahmed achieved top grades in subjects like economics, maths, biology, and chemistry, receiving recognition for his outstanding academic performance and dedication to helping fellow students succeed.
His exceptional grades secured him a coveted spot at the University of Cambridge to pursue his dream of becoming a National Health Service (NHS) doctor.
Ahmed credited his decision to study medicine to the compassionate care he received from NHS staff during his hospital visits. Inspired by their dedication, he aspires to make a positive difference in the lives of others by providing quality healthcare.
