Stars Shine Again at British Spring College Maths competition

Cursory: The British Spring College Mathematics Competition, has gained popularity among schools in the southeast and south-south states. The competition attracted 428 candidates for the 2023 edition, with the top three contestants receiving prizes. Lady Uju Dike also established a separate scholarship scheme for children in Spring Field Academy, the primary school arm of British Spring College. The Principal highlighted the college’s use of modern technologies in teaching. while a previous winner shared her positive experience and emphasized the college’s focus on developing skills and confidence in students. The British Spring College Mathematics Competition and Lady Uju Dike Scholarship Scheme, initiated by Director Lady Uju Dike, have gained significant traction as they enter their 6th and 5th editions, respectively.

Schools in the southeast and south-south regions eagerly anticipate these events, sending their brightest students to compete for the various opportunities available.

Lady Uju Dike also established a separate scholarship program for students of Spring Field Academy, the primary school affiliated with British Spring College, in addition to the mathematics competition open to students from other schools. This ensures that children from both within and outside the institution can benefit from these initiatives.

For the 2023 edition, a total of 428 candidates picked forms and competed through the various stages until the last forty standing were finally selected for the last stage.

The last forty went through another elimination stages that thirty out of the forty all received a handshake and cash prizes of N10,000 each. The last seven were also rewarded leaving the stage for the top three contestants.

Principal of the College, Kcent Obi in an opening remark described British Spring College as the Silicon Valley of the time where modern technologies are deployed in teaching.

“We are here because we believe that education is an exercise that should be made available for every child irrespective of background.

“Therefore, it is our culture that every year we open our gates to receive some children from various primary schools across the nation who ordinarily would love to be here but perhaps some other factors wouldn’t enable them to be here, expose them to some set of tests and be able to pick those who will deserve our scholarship scheme.

“As BSC would say- if you can solve mathematics, if you are good in mathematics, then come, we are going to make this place a haven for you, to make your dreams a reality” he said.

A pioneer winner and beneficiary of the scholarship scheme Onubogu Chinazom who took the competitors on a jolly good ride memory- wise on what the competition entails and the prospects of being a student of BSC Awka recalled how the journey started for her in 2017/ 2018.

She recalled that the global scourge of COVID-19 truncated the competition in 2021 but the vision bearer and Director of BSC , Lady Uju Dike remained undaunted as she saw the need to bridge the gap and the project has continued till today.

She told the participating pupils that British Spring College has brought a lot of innovation in teaching and learning and deploys digital technology in the course of learning.

She testified to be a partaker and beneficiary of the BSC vision of raising a generation of students with the right skills for knowledge and mental ability to excel in life and continue in the positive development of the society , building confidence on the students with dexterity and with teachers always there to guide and correct the students.

Shortly before taking the audience on a suspense filled journey of unveiling the winners, Director, British Spring College, Lady Uju Dike in a brief remark thanked the participants for believing in the vision and project.

She said some of the people who bought the scholarship competition forms can actually afford the financial obligations of the school but they bought the forms out of love.

She encouraged the parents to accept whatever be the outcome of the results and consider their children who reached the last stage of the competition as stars and winners.

With bated breath filled with tension and anxiety, Amakwu Princess with 82 percent score came 3rd in the Lady Uju Dike Scholarship Scheme category reserved exclusively for students from Spring Field Academy, Onitsha. Maduike Chiemerie came 2nd with 90.25percent while Mbadugha Mmachukwu emerged tops as the 1st prize winner with 93 percent.

For the British Spring Mathematics Competition category made open for students from various other schools outside, Ama Chibuike emerged the 3rd position winner with 89.75 percent while Agabige Naetochi scored 90 percent to emerge the 2nd position even as Nwani Chigozirim from a private school in Nnewi emerged the star of the day in this category with 92.75 percent to clinch the 1st position.

The first prize winners on both categories went home with cash prizes of N200, 000 each, decorated with gold medals and certificates of achievement. Both first prize winners are to enjoy 100 percent scholarship in tuition and boarding fees all through their college days at British Spring College.

Their mathematics teachers also smiled home with cash prizes of N150,000 each while their schools got complete set of computers.She acknowledged that all the finalist are champions too while noting that as parents, they also gave the required support to their son as he was preparing for the exam.

She also appreciated the British Spring College family and the Director, Lady Uju Dike for making such opportunity available for gifted children noting that they are taking the scholarship offer immediately.For the star boy , Chigozirim Nwani , a science inclined pupil who told the reporter that he is yet to decide on his career path in life for now, it was a fulfilling exercise.

“I feel happy and excited. I wasn’t expecting the first position because I saw many struggling for the same thing but I thank God who really made it possible for me” he quipped.Mrs Chidimma Mbadugha whose daughter , Mbadugha Mmachukwu aspiring to be a medical doctor won the first position in the Lady Uju Dike scholarship scheme category, it was also an exciting experience .

The Onitsha based businesswoman whose husband is also into business said she was expectant but wasn’t over confident because of other brilliant kids participating too.

She disclosed that her daughter also has an outstanding scholarship in another prospective school but they will decide on which one to choose though the daughter has disclosed that she is already in love with British Spring College.

The school consultant, Shola Animashaun who flew in from the UK for the event described the school Director, Lady Uju Dike as a gift to humanity and blessing to the education sector in Nigeria. He assured that the college will continue to wax stronger without compromise of any sort in standards

The 2nd position prize winners also received cash prizes of N100, 000 each, 75 percent scholarship in tuition and boarding fees and photocopying machine for the schools. Their maths teachers also received cash rewards of N75, 000 each.

The 3rd position prize winners received N50, 000 cash prizes each with 50 percent scholarships. N30, 000 for the teachers, and printers for the schools.In a chat with the Director of British Spring College, Lady Uju Dike she said that despite challenges in Nigeria’s economy, she has kept the ball rolling and the scholarship scheme running because the initiative has a divine direction.

“I will start by saying that this is God’s calling and I have every reason to be grateful to God. If you look at the school environment, there are a whole lot of changes positively. We started small but God has been blessing us, why won’t we give back to the society? This is my own way of saying Thank You Jesus for everything you are doing. My own way of saying thank you Nigerians for your support so far” Lady Dike said.

She told the reporter that she remains resolute that the scheme will not only continue as long as life remains but that her children will even continue the legacy even when she is no more there.On the records of academic excellence achieved by the school even in international competitions, she attributed the successes to God and hard work.

“When people ask me this, I sit back and smile because the logo of this school is God is our strength. I did not make a mistake in choosing that as the school logo because God has always been our strength. We might not be the best in the country but anytime we go for a competition, God will always show up for us and prove that He is solidly behind us. Apart from that, here in BSC, we work very hard.

“My staff members are committed; while the students are committed too as they always aspire to be the best. If you look at the boards mounted here, all the awards we have won are clear indication of our hard work and commitment towards excellence.” She said.

For Mrs Nwani whose son Nwani Chigozirim won the overall first position in the BSC mathematics competition category, she was all smiles as she dedicated the victory to God too.

“I am very -very happy. All I want to say is thank you Lord because I know the God I serve is too faithful to fail me.”

Mrs Nwani said she came prepared to go home as the best among the best because her son really prepared intellectually and spiritually for the exercise.

She acknowledged that all the finalist are champions too while noting that as parents, they also gave the required support to their son as he was preparing for the exam.
