Meet 17-year-old Kid Who Will be Flying Nigeria’s Flag in a Maths Competition in Japan, Rwanda

Cursory: This is Oghenerukevwe Patrick Esemitodje, the SS2 student who will be representing Nigeria at the Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) and International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO). The competitions will occur in Japan and Rwanda.

In this year’s Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) and International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO), Oghenerukevwe Patrick Esemitodje, a Senior Secondary School (SSS 2) student at the Nigerian Tulip International College (NTIC), will represent Nigeria.

The Competitions, PAMO and IMO will take place in Kigali, Rwanda, and Chiba, Japan, respectively, in May and July 2023.

Speaking about the young man’s amazing achievement, NTIC managing director Feyzullah Bilgin revealed that Oghenerukevwe had previously taken the senior mathematics and senior informatics exams despite being ill on that particular day.

Bilgin said that when results were released, Oghenerukevwe had qualified for the second round of both examinations.

I need to say that he was the only one that sat for two examinations among all NTIC Ogun students. “The second round of the examinations was written on Friday, 21st January 2023, at Agidingbi Grammar School, Lagos. As expected, the second round was harder than the first round and it was an essay examination unlike the first round that was objective questions.

This time around again, it was only Rukevwe that wrote two examinations that same day and I conclude that he was the only students that wrote two subjects in the first round and qualified in both subjects for the second round in the whole Lagos state,” NTIC director added.

The NTIC MD added that the 17-year-old student qualified for the third round in both subjects, a feat he has been accomplishing for the past two years. With his qualifications, Oghenerukevwe is one of the few pupils who represented Lagos in the national and third round in Abuja, according to the NTIC MD.

The Abuja round was a seven-day competition that took place at the National Mathematics Centre in Abuja from April 16 to April 21.

Oghenerukevwe reportedly attended both the mathematics and informatics training sessions at the same time.

The director added, “At the end of the rigorous training and examinations, Rukevwe came first in the third round examination in Mathematics and averaged second overall after the addition of the previous rounds. Unfortunately, he came fourth in the Informatics examination as the scores in previous rounds weren’t used and he missed out on representing Nigeria in Informatics.”
