Two Niger Delta University students died in a head-on collision between a truck and a tricycle on Bayelsa’s Yenagoa–Amassoma Road, prompting renewed calls for road safety enforcement due to reckless driving and poor road signage.

Two students from Niger Delta University, Amassoma, lost their lives on Wednesday following a head-on collision between a commercial tricycle and a speeding truck on the Yenagoa–Amassoma Road in Bayelsa State.
The tragic crash occurred at a sharp bend along the road, a location residents describe as dangerous due to the lack of road signs and frequent overspeeding by drivers. The truck, reportedly negotiating the bend at high speed, lost control and rammed into the tricycle, crushing it completely.
A local trader, Godspower Okilo, who witnessed the incident, said, “The tricycle had no way to escape. The truck was already too close when the driver realized he was going too fast.”
Good Samaritans rushed to the scene, rescuing survivors and transporting the injured to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa. The bodies of the deceased were taken to a nearby morgue.
Residents have renewed calls for stricter road safety enforcement. Suggestions include speed breakers, increased patrols by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and more rigorous checks on heavy-duty vehicles.
Mrs. Ebike Ekain, another local, warned that without immediate government action, more lives could be lost. She emphasized that the recently reconstructed stretch of the road now includes several dangerous bends, which many drivers ignore while speeding.
Bayelsa State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Musa Muhammad, confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing to determine the full cause of the accident.
