20-Year-Old Lady Earns Biomedical Engineering Degree, Wins Full Medical School Scholarship

At just 20 years old, Bernadelle Boateng—an exceptional first-generation college student—graduated with a biomedical engineering degree from Boston University on a full scholarship and is now headed to medical school with another full-ride, determined to merge engineering and medicine to transform healthcare.

A brilliant young woman, Bernadelle Boateng, has achieved a remarkable milestone by graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University, which boasts one of the top 10 biomedical engineering programs in the United States. At just 20 years old, she has also secured a fully funded scholarship to medical school.

🔬 From Engineering to Medicine

Bernadelle began her journey at Frederick Douglass Academy, where her outstanding academic performance earned her a full-ride scholarship to study at Boston University in 2020. Balancing a demanding engineering course load with pre-med studies, she remained determined and focused.

“So proud to announce that I have graduated from the Top 10 Biomedical Engineering Program in the country, on a full ride! Balancing the rigors of both the engineering and pre-med curriculum as a first-generation college student has been my biggest challenge yet, but to God be the glory,” she shared.

Real-World Experience

In 2023, Bernadelle gained practical experience as a Bioanalytics Intern at Sanofi Pharmaceuticals, working on bioassay and molecular analysis. This hands-on role deepened her interest in healthcare and research, further fueling her passion for a medical career.

Off to Medical School with Another Full Scholarship

Thanks to her outstanding academic record and dedication, Bernadelle was awarded the prestigious Turner Fellowship, granting her a full scholarship to attend the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.

Now among just 5.6% of Black Biomedical Engineers in the U.S., Bernadelle plans to combine her engineering background and medical training to make a meaningful impact in healthcare.

Gratitude & Vision

Bernadelle expressed deep appreciation to God, her mentors, and her support system for their unwavering encouragement throughout her journey. With medical school ahead, she’s more committed than ever to using her skills to solve real-world health problems.
