2024 WASSCE: WAEC Withholds 215,267 Results

WAEC has withheld the results of 215,267 candidates from the 2024 WASSCE due to reported examination malpractice, a decrease from last year’s percentage, while 73.79% of candidates achieved credit or above in at least five subjects.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of 215,267 candidates from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), representing 11.92% of the 1,805,216 candidates who sat for the exam.

The 2024 WASSCE took place from 30th April to 24th June. During the announcement of the results on Monday, WAEC’s Nigeria Office Head, Dr. Amos Dangut, explained that the results were withheld due to various reported cases of examination malpractice. He noted that this percentage is 4.37% lower than the 16.29% withheld in the 2023 WASSCE for School Candidates.

Dr. Dangut emphasized the Council’s commitment to penalizing all instances of malpractice, highlighting that the use of mobile phones in exam halls and organized cheating in some schools remain significant issues. He assured that all cases are under investigation, and the findings will be reviewed by the appropriate Council committee, with decisions communicated to the affected candidates through their schools. Candidates have the option to seek redress through the WAEC website.

In addition to addressing malpractice, Dr. Dangut reported that 73.79% of candidates, or 1,332,089 individuals, achieved credit or above in at least five subjects, with or without English Language and/or Mathematics.

He urged candidates to apply for their Digital Certificates 48 hours after checking their results online and confirmed that those who have fulfilled their financial obligations can access their results on the WAEC website within 12 hours. Result Listings will be sent to schools shortly.

The 2024 WASSCE was conducted across four WAEC member countries: Nigeria, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
