A 26-year-old woman earned a PhD in Applied Mathematics, becoming the youngest graduate in her class.

Shavani Naicker, 26, has reached a remarkable academic milestone by earning a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), becoming the youngest doctoral graduate in her 2025 class.
Her academic journey began at UKZN, where she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Astrophysics in 2019. She followed it with an honours degree in Applied Mathematics, graduating summa cum laude in 2020. She later completed both her master’s and doctoral studies at the same institution.

A Passion Sparked by the Cosmos
Shavani’s fascination with the universe began in childhood, inspired by great minds like Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, and Isaac Newton. Her interest in astrophysics deepened during her honours year, where mentorship from Dr. Byron Brassel guided her toward a research-focused career.
She conducted her PhD research under the Astrophysics Research Centre (ARC), South Africa’s leading institution in gravitational studies.
Focus of Her PhD: Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity
Her research explored Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity—an advanced extension of Einstein’s general relativity. She tackled complex nonlinear equations to study how massive celestial bodies behave in conditions where traditional physics does not apply.
Her findings contribute to global efforts in theoretical physics, astronomy, and cosmology.
A Future in Research and Teaching
Currently a postdoctoral fellow at ARC, Shavani is supported by South Africa’s National Research Foundation Scarce Skills Program. She aspires to become a professor and eventually lead a research center, mentoring the next generation of scientists.
“Earning a PhD is not just a personal goal — it’s a dream realized through years of persistence, curiosity, and love for science,” she said.
Shavani hopes her story will inspire young women to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
