Husband Demands Justice Over Alleged Harassment of Wife by ATBU Lecturer

A husband has petitioned Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University and legal authorities to investigate allegations that a lecturer harassed his wife, a postgraduate student, with threats to derail her graduation when she rejected his advances.

Jafaru Buba, the husband of a postgraduate student at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has urged the institution to investigate allegations of sexual harassment involving a lecturer from the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Addressing journalists in Bauchi, Buba revealed that his legal representatives had submitted a formal petition to the ATBU Vice-Chancellor, the Head of the Chemical Engineering Department, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The petition, filed by Barrister Mohammed Sani, accuses the lecturer of persistently harassing the student. Allegations include summoning her to his office and sending inappropriate messages via WhatsApp, despite being aware of her marital status.

When the student rejected his advances, the lecturer allegedly threatened to fail her and obstruct her graduation from her Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) program.

To support the claims, the petition includes copies of WhatsApp conversations as evidence and calls for a comprehensive investigation by the university to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

In response to inquiries, ATBU Public Relations Officer Zailani Bappah stated that he was not yet aware of the matter but would seek confirmation from university management.

The case, currently filed at Bauchi State High Court 7, is scheduled for further hearing on November 27, 2027.
