KWASU dismisses lecturer over sexual harassment

A member of the academic staff of the Kwara State University, KWASU Pelumi Adewale has been dismissed over alleged sexual harassment of a female student, Tosin Adegunsoye, from the Department of Pure and Applied Sciences.

The VC of the university, Mustapha Akanbi, disclosed this while addressing a news conference in Ilorin on Monday ahead of the eighth and ninth convocation ceremonies of the institution.

He declared the lecturer Pelumi Adewale ceased to be a staff of the institution for his act adding that:

“The security agency has taken up the case and it is in court already, but I am informing you officially that the man is now an ex-staff member of the institution. He is a disgrace to our great institution and we won’t condone such acts,”

It was reported that Adewale was earlier arraigned on September, 11 before a magistrate court sitting in Ilorin, after which he was arrested by the State Intelligence Bureau over offenses bordering on criminal intimidation, sexual harassment, and examination malpractices.

A petition dated October 15 by Adegunsoye had alleged that in September, Adewale, a lecturer assigned to teach her a course, MLS 212 Cell and Molecular Biology, phoned her threatening to fail her in her forthcoming examination if she refused to have sex with him.

Mr. Adewale allegedly lured the student into his bedroom apartment in the evening around 8:30pm at Taoheed Road, Basin Area, Ilorin, where he reportedly gave her a new question paper and the institution’s answer script to rewrite her examination on the premise that she will have sexual intercourse with her till daybreak.

The lecturer was however apprehended in the process by the detectives who were kept hiding at a secured location to monitor the development.

The Presiding Magistrate Ibrahim Mohammed ruled over the case obliging the application of the defense and granting the accused bail in the sum of N200,000.

The case was however adjourned till December 8 for further hearing.

The action taken against this lecturer is a very good and strict one. This will serve as a deterrent to others who are intending or already perpetuating such acts.
