3 Nigerian Students Miss Deadline for Fee Payment Face Deportation

Cursory: Nigerian students Omolade Olaitan, Emmanuel Okohoboh, and Paulette Ojogun faced removal from Swansea University’s enrollment list due to late payment of fees. Despite appeals, the university retained their fees, and the students were instructed to leave. The university however is offering options for refunds and deferring studies as alternatives.

Late payment of school fees resulted in the removal of three Nigerian students from the enrollment roster at Swansea University in the UK.

Omolade Olaitan, Emmanuel Okohoboh, and Paulette Ojogun were the affected students, and their fees were received a few hours beyond the expected deadline.

The students have communicated to the university that the delay in fee payment was due to the economic challenges faced by Nigeria earlier in 2023.

Despite their explanations, Swansea University has chosen to retain the N3.8 million (4000 pounds) in fees and instructed the students to leave.

The payment deadline, which fell on March 27, 2023, was not met by the trio. For instance, Omolade Olaitan submitted her payment on March 29.

She said: “On the 29th (March) I got an email from income tuition. They confirmed my payment and they told me that because the payment didn’t come in before the deadline, they can no longer allow me to enrol and that I should pack my bags and go back to my home country.”

Another student, Emmanuel Okohoboh, who got admission to start a master’s degree in Business Management, is also facing deportation.

Emmanuel said two parcels of land were sold to raise his fees. His words: “They are not fair, they are not compassionate, they are showing no signs of empathy. I had to sell my dad’s land and a piece of my own personal land to get the resources to come to Swansea University to study. Coming here and going through this situation has been mentally draining and frustrating for me.”

Paulette Ojogun, a fellow student pursuing a marketing management degree, also submitted her fees beyond the stipulated deadline.

She was visibly emotional and tearful in a video footage accessible on the ITV website.

Paulette lamented: “I am happy that I am here, I am happy that I am studying, so why would you take that away from me because my school fees came in late? I’ve explained everything to them, I sent emails, and they still would not give me a listening ear.”

Legit.ng contacted Swansea University via email to seek clarification, and the institution verified the situation.

In their response, the university expressed its regret over the challenges encountered by certain students. However, due to their current UKVI status, the university is unable to reinstate their enrollment.

Despite this, the university has extended support by providing guidance on obtaining a refund and the option to defer their studies to a later commencement date.

The email read:

“We are of course saddened by the difficulties facing some students and while we are not able to re-enrol them at this stage due to their UKVI status, we have offered advice and guidance, including on securing a refund and on deferring their study to a later start point.”
