36-Year-Old Nigerian Becomes Professor of Mechanical Engineering in Europe Just 3 Years After PhD

Dr. Chukwumaobi Oluah, a 36-year-old Nigerian scholar, became a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Vrije Universiteit Brussels just three years after earning his PhD, following a rapid academic rise through international research roles in South Africa, the UK, and the Netherlands.

Dr. Chukwumaobi Oluah, a 36-year-old Nigerian scholar, has achieved a major academic milestone by becoming a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Vrije Universiteit Brussels in Belgium — only three years after completing his PhD.

The news was shared by a close friend on social media:

“Today, my dear friend Chukwumaobi Oluah has been made a Professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussels. He is also a Post-Doc at the Eindhoven University of Technology. He’s a Mechanical Engineer — and just 36 years old!”

A Journey Fueled by Passion and Determination

Oluah began his academic journey at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2012. His drive for innovation and engineering led him to pursue a Master’s degree at UNN, which he completed in 2018.

Following his master’s, he gained recognition in Nigeria as a skilled mechanical design expert before seeking international research opportunities.

International Research, Global Recognition

In 2019, he began a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, with a research focus on sustainable energy systems and advanced modeling techniques.

After completing his doctorate in 2022, Dr. Oluah’s career advanced rapidly:

  • 2022–2023: Research Associate at Heriot-Watt University, Scotland – worked on smart local energy systems
  • Visiting Scholar at Northumbria University, UK
  • Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands

Through these roles, he developed expertise in renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, and engineering systems modeling.

A Professor at 36

In 2024, Dr. Oluah was appointed Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Vrije Universiteit Brussels, one of Belgium’s leading research institutions. His rapid rise reflects his academic brilliance and the global impact of his research contributions.

Dr. Oluah’s achievement highlights the talent and perseverance of Nigerian-trained scholars and their ability to thrive on the international stage.
