Theresa Chang, 71, graduated with a BA in Communication from University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, proving “you’re never too old to pursue your dreams”. She balanced studies with a full-time job as a substance abuse counselor at Lōkahi Treatment Center, Pāhoa.
Chang’s journey’s remarkable: she dropped out of high school at 17, battled addiction for 30 years, and got her GED at 58. After moving to Big Island, she earned certificates and associate degrees, then pursued a BA to better serve clients.
Her late son’s memory inspired her; her family’s support kept her going. Professor Ronald Gordon praised her vitality: “Terri’s a gem”. Chang’s advice: “You’re never too old to pursue your dreams”.
Chang’s story highlights the power of resilience and determination. Despite facing personal tragedy, including her son’s death just months before starting classes, she persevered and achieved her goal with a 3.6 GPA.
Her graduation was a celebration of her achievements, with family flying in to support her. Chang’s now focusing on inspiring others, using her experience to help those battling addiction.
