The United Kingdom aims to increase the influx of international students to its educational institutions to 600,000 annually by 2030, with a particular focus on countries like Nigeria, India, and Vietnam.
As outlined in a report by Hazel Shearing of the BBC, the government has set this target and is specifically aiming to attract students from nations including Nigeria, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia.
Education exports are recognized as pivotal in bolstering the UK economy, prompting efforts by the government to enhance the nation’s soft power through reputation building and global networking.
According to projections, a single cohort of international students staying in the UK for a year could contribute approximately 41.9 billion pounds to the country’s economy.
The report said: “It surpassed its 600,000 target in 2020-21 and 2021-22,” according to the most recent data.
Recent data from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) indicates a decrease in the number of nursing applicants, raising concerns highlighted by the Royal College of Nursing about potential staffing shortages in the National Health Service (NHS).
However, there has been a consecutive increase in the number of international students applying to undergraduate programs at UK universities.
For the upcoming September intake, the number of applicants from outside the UK stands at 115,730, up from 114,910 the previous year. This rise is noteworthy given the stricter government regulations aimed at reducing migration, prompted by allegations of universities compromising standards to attract higher-paying overseas students.
Despite this positive trend, the number of international applicants remains slightly below the pre-pandemic figure of 116,110, as reported by BusinessDay.
