CONUA Distance Itself From UniAbuja ASUU Strike

The University of Abuja’s Congress of University Academics (CONUA) chapter distance itself from the ongoing strike initiated by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The University of Abuja’s Congress of University Academics (CONUA) chapter has distanced itself from the ongoing strike initiated by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the university.

During a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, the chapter chairman, Prof. Abdul Buba, made this announcement in Abuja.

Buba emphasized the importance of maintaining a stable academic calendar and expressed the belief that labor disputes could be resolved through alternative means rather than resorting to strikes.

“We prioritize addressing issues over personalities and uphold the opinions of our members. Our approach is objective and inclusive, devoid of sentiments,” he stated.

He further emphasized CONUA’s commitment to engaging stakeholders to advocate for the welfare of its members without involving itself in matters outside its purview.

“We do not support the current strike because it contradicts our principles of academic excellence and service delivery,” Buba asserted, addressing the baseless nature of the strike’s demands, particularly regarding the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor.

Similarly, Prof. Issa Abdulraheem, the CONUA Secretary, reiterated the union’s focus on member welfare, dismissing the allegations raised by ASUU as irrelevant to staff welfare.

In response, Vice Chancellor Na’Allah commended CONUA for abstaining from the strike and expressed optimism about the resumption of academic activities.

The ASUU branch initiated the indefinite strike on May 2, citing various grievances including allegations of election irregularities and promotion processes at the university.
