Friday Alobu, a former okada rider hailing from Amagu village in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi state, has achieved a remarkable milestone by attaining a PhD, becoming the first in his family to receive a formal education.
Reflecting on his journey, Friday recalls the challenges he faced while striving to elevate his social status through education. Despite starting as a motorcyclist to meet his basic needs, Friday harbored aspirations of pursuing higher academic qualifications.
Coming from a humble background, Friday encountered financial barriers that initially hindered his educational pursuits beyond secondary school. Determined to break free from the constraints of poverty, he sought alternative employment opportunities and seized the chance to join the Nigerian police force in 2001.
In an interview with LEGIT.NG, Dr. Friday Alobu shed light on his struggles and aspirations: “I am from Ohatekwe Amagu in Ikwo LGA of Ebonyi state. I actually came from a poor background where I was the only person to have attended university to the level of PhD. My father and mother didn’t attend even primary school, let alone secondary school.”
He continued, “I was born with siblings of seven, but none of them attended university, and some dropped out from secondary school. After my secondary school, there was nobody to train me; hence I had no option but to join okada riding in my village.”
Driven by his determination to transcend his circumstances, Friday enrolled in university while serving in the Nigerian Police Force, embracing the challenge as an opportunity to pursue his academic aspirations against all odds.
Friday Alobu’s journey from an okada rider to a PhD holder exemplifies resilience, perseverance, and the transformative power of education in breaking the cycle of poverty.
