A tragic incident occurred at Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) in Oyo State, where a 200-level student named Alex Timileyin was allegedly beaten to death by fellow students over accusations of stealing a mobile phone.

The fatal beating took place at Shepherd Inn, a hostel on the university campus, on Saturday, May 25, 2024.

According to sources, the assault began around 6 PM on Friday and continued until approximately 10 AM on Saturday. The students also reportedly shaved Timileyin’s hair before the beating.

An anonymous source from the university, speaking to Punch, described the events: “They said they caught him with a stolen phone. They started beating him from 6 PM yesterday (Friday) until he died at about 10 AM today (Saturday). The incident happened at ‘Shepherd Inn,’ which is like a lodge or hostel now. They also shaved his hair before beating him.”

A video viewed by LIB depicted Timileyin rolling on the floor as other students struck him with sticks.

In response, the management of Ajayi Crowther University has expelled the students involved in Timileyin’s death. The institution’s spokesperson, Femi Atoyebi, announced the expulsions on Saturday, May 25.

The university’s statement emphasized that there is no cultism within the institution and reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for anti-societal behaviors and misconduct.

“Contrary to what is trending, the university affirms that there is no cultism in the institution, just as the university has zero tolerance for any sort of anti-societal vices and misconduct,” the statement read.

“It is important to stress that the expelled students do not belong to any cult group.”

Additionally, the university has handed over the expelled students to the Oyo State Police Command for further investigation.
