Heavy rainfall on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, led to flooding in several hostels of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.
Students had to navigate through the floodwaters to reach their exam halls for a midsemester exam.
A video circulating on social media showed significant flooding at the popular Ayeduase hostel.
Some students were seen wading through knee-deep water to get to their exams, with some male students helping their female peers, while others watched from the balcony.
The video, shared by @eddie_wrt on X, also showed student belongings submerged in the floodwaters. This incident highlights a recurring issue of flooding at KNUST hostels.
Social media users in Ghana have called for a resolution to this persistent flooding problem.
@the_law_himself: “Are they waiting for a flood to cause a hostel collapse before taking action? Those responsible for community planning must be held accountable.”
@UTDTopShotta: “Do we even have community planners in Ghana?”
@benbenaqua: “Imagine risking your life for a midsemester exam while your lecturer is aware of the flooding.”
@_joshuaosei: “And these are the expensive hostels too.”
