Kenneth O. D. Okwor, a distinguished Nigerian lawyer, celebrated earning a PhD in Law from the University of Cambridge, highlighting his research on the Eco currency, his academic journey, and the support that helped him achieve this milestone.
Kenneth O. D. Okwor, a distinguished Nigerian lawyer and academic, has earned a PhD in Law from the prestigious University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Kenneth celebrated his achievement on LinkedIn, sharing his journey and the significance of his doctoral work.
“One year after submitting my PhD thesis and nine months after a successful Viva, I returned to Cambridge to hold the finger, kneel, and be formally admitted to the degree of Doctor in Philosophia at a Congregation of the Regent House,” he announced.
Kenneth’s PhD research focused on the law, politics, and economics of the proposed single currency for ECOWAS, known as the Eco. His thesis, which he describes as developing the corpus of ‘Ecozone Law,’ explores the issuance of the Eco as a trade-facilitating regional Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).
Kenneth’s academic journey began with an LL.B from the University of Jos, Nigeria, where he graduated in the top 1% of his class. He then attended the Nigerian Law School, graduating with first-class honors and receiving the Star Prize for being the Best Student out of 5,000. His outstanding performance earned him a teaching position at the Nigerian Law School at the age of 24.
He furthered his education by obtaining a Master of Corporate Law from the University of Cambridge and a Master of Law from Harvard University before enrolling in the PhD program at Cambridge as a Rowan Williams Scholar and Wolfson College Scholar.
Kenneth expressed hope that his work would provide valuable guidance to ECOWAS, acknowledging the challenges in achieving the Eco due to low levels of trade and legal integration in the region.
Reflecting on the past year, Kenneth shared the fulfillment he felt, balancing a demanding job at the African Development Bank, getting married, completing his PhD, and securing a new job. He also expressed gratitude for his new life in the UK, which exceeded his expectations from five years ago.
Kenneth thanked his supervisor, Eilis Ferran, his examiners, the Cambridge Trust, and Wolfson College for their support and funding through the Rowan Williams Scholarship.
In 2024, One year after he submitted his PhD thesis he returned to Cambridge to hold the finger, kneel, and be formally admitted to the degree of Doctoris in Philosophia at a Congregation of the Regent House.
