ASUU Issues 21-Day Ultimatum to Federal Government Over Unmet Demands

ASUU has issued the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum to address several unmet demands, including renegotiation of agreements, salary payments, and university revitalization, following a NEC meeting at the University of Ibadan.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has decided to give the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum, in accordance with labor laws.

This decision was reached during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which took place at the University of Ibadan (UI) from Saturday, August 17th to Sunday, August 18th, 2024.

A source informed Daily Sun that the NEC meeting also instructed ASUU branches to hold a referendum to determine whether to proceed with a strike, and if so, whether it should be an indefinite or staggered one.

ASUU’s demands include the renegotiation of the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement, payment of withheld salaries, adoption of the UTAS system for salary payments, resolution of promotion arrears, halting the proliferation of universities, revitalization of public universities, settlement of outstanding Earned Academic Allowances, addressing the victimization of union leaders, and payment of salaries to members in some state universities.

Previously, the union noted that the Federal Government had promised to address these demands in the 2023 budget, which has not been fulfilled.
