The Nigerian government has allocated N47.5 billion for the first phase of upgrading 50 senior secondary schools nationwide, with the project including new facilities and set to be completed within six months, starting with Government Science Secondary School in Koton Karfe, Kogi State.

This announcement was made by Dr. Iyela Ajayi, the Executive Secretary of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), during the groundbreaking ceremony of Government Science Secondary School (GSSC) in Koton Karfe, Kogi State.
Dr. Ajayi stated that GSSC, Koton Karfe, is the only school in Kogi State included in this initial phase, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s renewed commitments to improving education.
He assured that other schools would be considered in subsequent phases, encouraging them to be patient.
“This is just the first phase. Once completed, we will report back to President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Education to advance to the next phase,” Ajayi explained, noting that the initial intervention covers a budget of N47.5 billion for the 50 schools.
He urged the school principal to support the contractor, particularly in protecting existing facilities, and called on the contractor to expedite the project for completion within the next six months, ensuring adherence to the agreed quality to prevent issues like building collapses.
Maimuna Umar, Director of the Physical Planning Unit at the commission, stated that the project will include four new buildings: six classroom blocks, an administrative block, a laboratory, and an ICT and e-library facility to enhance learning.
School principal Yunusa Dauda praised the government’s initiative, noting that although learning had continued, the school needed proper infrastructure for students to learn comfortably.
“We are grateful that this project is happening now, and we will fully support the contractor to ensure timely completion,” Dauda said.
The contractor, Managing Director of First Man Industries Link Limited, committed to delivering the project as per the contract terms.
