Students Frustrated as ABU Distance Learning Centre Insists on Holding Exams in Flood-Stricken Maiduguri

Students of Ahmadu Bello University Distance Learning Centre are frustrated by the institution’s decision to hold exams in flood-stricken Maiduguri, despite safety concerns and calls for rescheduling.

Students of Ahmadu Bello University Distance Learning Centre (ABU DLC) have expressed frustration over the institution’s decision to proceed with exams at its Maiduguri centre, despite the recent floods that have impacted over a million residents.

The exams were scheduled to begin on Friday across various centres in Nigeria, including Maiduguri. However, on Tuesday, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that 70% of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, had been submerged due to severe flooding, leaving many residents trapped and displacing dangerous wildlife, including crocodiles and snakes from the Sanda Kyarimi Zoological Park.

Despite the chaos, ABU DLC sent an email to its students on Wednesday, confirming that exams would still be conducted at the Maiduguri centre. The email offered two options for students unable to take the exams due to the flood: applying for an emergency deferment or traveling to the Yola centre, a 10-hour drive away, to write their exams.

Nana Aisha, a Maiduguri-based student who opted for a different exam centre, criticized the decision, expressing concern for her fellow students. “Some may not even be aware of the email due to the situation, and they are likely not in the right state of mind to sit for exams,” she told FIJ.

The option of traveling to Yola has also been met with skepticism. Many students and social media users criticized the university for expecting students to travel such a long distance amid dangerous conditions. One X user, @_Gonii, posted, “In all this devastation, @ABU_DLC is asking students to either go to Adamawa or defer the semester. If it’s not safe for invigilators, it’s not safe for us either.”

Concerns continue to grow as students and their families question the feasibility and safety of holding exams under such conditions. Many have called for the university to automatically reschedule the exams for students in Maiduguri.
