UNIBEN Vice Chancellor, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, has raised concerns over low student enrollment in the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and urged for better sensitization to boost participation, as the program has disbursed over N11 billion to students nationwide, including N24.4 million to 332 UNIBEN students.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Prof. Edoba Omoregie, has expressed concern over the low enrollment of students into the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
Speaking during a meeting with NELFUND officials in Abuja, Prof. Omoregie highlighted the need for increased participation of UNIBEN students in the loan program. According to a statement from the university’s Public Relations Office, the Vice Chancellor’s visit aimed to explore ways to boost student enrollment in the scheme.
Responding to the Vice Chancellor’s concerns, Mustapha Iyal, NELFUND’s Executive Director of Operations, identified inadequate sensitization and skepticism about the program’s authenticity as key reasons for the low participation. He assured the Vice Chancellor that the fund is committed to accommodating more UNIBEN students, provided they apply and meet the eligibility requirements.
Iyal also congratulated Prof. Omoregie on his appointment and reiterated NELFUND’s readiness to support students.
As of August 16, 2024, 332 UNIBEN students had benefited from NELFUND, receiving a total of N24.4 million in loans. Nationwide, the fund has disbursed over N11 billion to 105,764 students across 98 federal and state tertiary institutions as of November 23, 2024.
