Professor Florence Obi, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UniCal), anticipates that the university will achieve a record number of first-class graduates during its 36th convocation ceremony.
Speaking at a press conference preceding the event scheduled for March 21 and March 22, the VC of the 49-year-old institution revealed that 32 students would graduate with first-class honors, among a total of 8,415 graduands receiving various degrees and awards.
Additionally, Prof. Obi announced that three distinguished Nigerians would be honored with honorary awards for their significant contributions to society and humanity.
She also highlighted that the convocation would feature a lecture titled “Harmonising Diversity for National Development,” to be delivered by Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Sokoto Diocese of the Catholic Church.
“On Friday will be the convocation of about 8,415 first degrees graduands out of which 32 would be conferred with first class honours and 745 Masters graduands. “Saturday will be the day for the convocation of 438 PhD graduands after the inauguration of five projects in the institution which include three pavilions and two hostels,” Mrs Obi said.
Among the notable individuals set to be honored are Dame Winifred Akpan, CEO of Northwest Oil and Gas; Ms. Bamijokotola Johnson, Trustee of Ecogreen Foundation and CEO of Catalyst Gold Agro Allied Limited; and Dr. Anyanwu Okechukwu, MD/CEO of DCL Group. The Chancellor of UniCal, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, Emir of Kano, is expected to grace the occasion with his presence.
Despite the ongoing nationwide strike by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Mrs. Obi assured that the 36th Convocation would proceed as planned.
