The University of Lagos (UNILAG) will graduate 16,409 students at its 55th convocation, including two with perfect 5.0 CGPAs, alongside honorary awards, a convocation lecture, and other key events spanning January 10–19, 2025.


The University of Lagos (UNILAG) will confer degrees on 16,409 students during its 55th convocation ceremony, with two students, Damilare Adebakin and Samuel Badekale, achieving a perfect 5.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics in the Faculty of Science.
At a media briefing, UNILAG Vice-Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola announced that the convocation would begin on Friday, January 10, 2025, with a Jumaat service and conclude with a thanksgiving service on Sunday, January 19, 2025. Of the graduating students, 9,684 will receive first degrees and diplomas, 6,659 will be awarded postgraduate degrees, and 66 will graduate from the UNILAG Business School.
The convocation lecture, titled “Universities as Hubs for Development and Wealth Creation,” will be delivered by Dr. Tayo Aduloju, CEO of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group, on Monday, January 13, at the J.F. Ade-Ajayi Auditorium. Former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola will chair the event, which aims to address tertiary education funding and its role in economic and social development.
Three distinguished Nigerians will receive honorary Doctor of Science degrees:
• Fola Adeola, co-founder of Guaranty Trust Bank
• Engr. Kolawole Adesina, Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group
• Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization
Key Events
• January 13: Groundbreaking ceremony for the School of Postgraduate Studies building, donated by Chief Tunde Fanimokun in celebration of his 80th birthday.
• January 14-16: Award ceremonies for degrees, diplomas, and certificates across various faculties, with postgraduate degrees and diplomas conferred on January 16.
• January 17: A convocation play titled Langbodo by Wale Ogunyemi will be staged.
• January 19: The ceremonies will conclude with a Thanksgiving Service at the Chapel of Christ Our Light, University of Lagos, at 10:00 am.
Prof. Ogunsola emphasized that the events aim to celebrate academic excellence while addressing critical discussions on the role of universities in fostering development and innovation.
