Students in Abako town clashed with soldiers after a head girl was allegedly assaulted for seizing a prohibited earring, leading to gunfire, injuries, and the burning of an army checkpoint.

A violent clash erupted in Abako town, Katsina-Ala, Benue State, after soldiers allegedly assaulted a secondary school head girl for confiscating earrings from a student, prompting other students to retaliate by attacking an army checkpoint, which led to soldiers opening fire and injuring some of them.
According to a teacher, the incident began when a soldier, who was dating the student, bought her earrings, which were later seized in class due to school rules. When the soldier confronted the head girl at a market checkpoint, she was allegedly harassed and beaten, along with a teacher who intervened.
Angered by the assault, students mobilized and attacked the soldiers, but were overpowered when the troops responded with gunfire and set up barricades.
The students have since demanded the removal of soldiers from the area, while the police confirmed the situation has been brought under control. Meanwhile, the school authorities have threatened legal action against the military over the soldiers’ conduct.
