WAEC Denies Claims of 2025 Exam Cancellation, Labels Viral Report Fake News

WAEC and the Federal Government have dismissed viral social media claims that the 2025 WASSCE was cancelled, confirming the exams were valid and results will be released by August 4.

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) have officially debunked false claims circulating online that the 2025 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) has been cancelled or that its results have been invalidated.

Both the Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC released separate statements urging the public to ignore the fabricated information spreading across social media platforms.

Speaking with Vanguard, Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry, categorically refuted the rumors.

“The SSSCE conducted by WAEC has not been cancelled. The reports online are completely false and misleading. We are currently preparing an official statement to clarify the matter,” she stated.

Boriowo emphasized that no such decision to cancel exams or results had been made by the government.

WAEC’s Public Affairs Department, represented by Moyosola Adesina, also issued an official rebuttal.

“WAEC Nigeria has been made aware of a fake press release circulating on social media. The document falsely claims that WAEC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, cancelled the 2025 WASSCE for School Candidates due to alleged examination malpractices, including question leaks and AI-related cheating,” the statement read.

“This false information is the work of mischief-makers intending to cause panic and discredit the Council. WAEC wishes to make it clear that no such statement originated from the organization. The 2025 examination has not been cancelled.”

WAEC confirmed that script marking has been completed and candidates’ results will be released on or before August 4, 2025.

Additionally, WAEC reminded the public that all official announcements are made only through its verified communication channels and authorized media outlets.

“All official WAEC press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office. We urge everyone to disregard the fake news.”

The fake report also falsely quoted a fabricated official, “Dr. (Mrs.) Aisha Lawal,” who was falsely identified as Director-General of the Federal Examinations Regulatory Board — a role that does not exist.

WAEC concluded by assuring candidates and the general public that their exam results remain valid and unaffected.
