The Ogun State Government has indefinitely suspended two Ilugun High School principals following the death of an allegedly unregistered student during a protest sparked by illegal fee collection.
The Ogun State Government has indefinitely suspended two principals of Ilugun High School in Elega, Abeokuta, following the controversial death of a student allegedly linked to the institution.
This decision was announced by Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, during a press briefing. His comments followed the circulation of a viral video showing students destroying school property in protest.
Suspended Officials:
- Mrs. Olukoga Alaba – Principal, Junior School
- Mrs. Olabisi Ladipo – Principal, Senior School
According to Arigbabu, the junior school principal had allegedly been collecting illegal fees, which triggered the student protest. Security personnel were called in to manage the unrest, but the situation escalated.
“We deeply regret the loss of life and extend our condolences to the family of the deceased. Our hearts are with them,” Arigbabu said.
Key Findings:
- The deceased student was known by three different names: Babalola Ayomide, Salako Jimoh, and Afolabi Babalola.
- None of these names were found in the official OGSERA (Ogun State Education Registration Application) database.
- This discrepancy suggests the student may have been illegally enrolled.
Investigations confirmed that the principal of the junior school had been engaging in unauthorized fee collection.
As a result, the government has placed both principals on indefinite suspension pending a full investigation into both the immediate and underlying causes of the incident.
Government Measures:
- A Whistleblower Scheme has been introduced by the Teaching Service Commission to encourage reports of misconduct within schools.
- The government reaffirmed its commitment to free and equitable education for all children, regardless of gender, religion, social background, or location.
