A brilliant Nigerian man, Joshua Atiba, has achieved a remarkable feat by securing a fully funded PhD scholarship to study Civil and Mineral Engineering at the University of Toronto, Canada, without first obtaining a master’s degree. This exceptional achievement highlights Joshua’s academic excellence, persistence, and strategic preparation.

Joshua’s academic journey began at Covenant University, Nigeria, where he earned a First Class Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering with a 4.52 CGPA. He then worked as a Research Assistant at Bell’s University, gaining hands-on research experience while applying for graduate opportunities abroad.

Joshua’s persistence paid off in 2025 when he received the fully funded PhD scholarship to the University of Toronto. He described the journey as “almost unreal,” citing the numerous challenges he faced, including sending hundreds of cold emails to professors and waiting months for responses.

Despite the challenges, Joshua completed his first semester and is now preparing for what’s ahead. He expressed gratitude to God, his family, friends, and academic mentors, including Prof. Ojo Sunday Fayomi, for their support and guidance.

Joshua’s story serves as inspiration to others searching for funded graduate opportunities. He encourages students to persevere, noting that “all that mattered was one fully funded opportunity working out — and it came when I least expected it”.
