Tension in Ekpoma as Court Remands 52 AAU Students Over Alleged Protest Against Kidnapping

Tension has gripped Ekpoma after a court remanded 52 Ambrose Alli University students for allegedly protesting against rising kidnapping and insecurity, sparking outrage and demands for their immediate release.

Tension has erupted in Ekpoma after a court ordered the remand of 52 Ambrose Alli University (AAU) students over their alleged role in a protest against kidnapping and worsening insecurity in the Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. The students were arrested late at night from different hostels across Ekpoma following a protest held last Saturday.

The demonstration was organised to draw attention to the growing cases of kidnapping and worsening security situation in the community, with residents alleging that several victims had been abducted directly from their homes. Students who spoke with SaharaReporters said the arrests were carried out in a coordinated operation, with police officers storming multiple hostels in the middle of the night and arresting students indiscriminately.

The students were arraigned in court and subsequently remanded in prison custody for 14 days. The development has heightened tension within the Ambrose Alli University community, as concerns continue to grow over insecurity in Ekpoma and the treatment of students who speak out against it.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the 52 students, describing their detention as “unjust” and “an attempt to criminalize legitimate grievances”.

The Edo State Police Command has stated that the arrests were made in connection with a violent protest, while defence lawyers argue that the charges of malicious damage and armed robbery are unfounded.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for the government to address the growing insecurity in Ekpoma and ensure the safety of students and residents.
