“₦15k Salary Is Unfair” – Woman Criticizes Low Pay for Teachers, Raises Alarm Over Future Shortage

A Nigerian woman criticized school owners for offering extremely low salaries to teachers—some as low as ₦15,000—warning that poor pay could drive educators away and cause a future crisis in the education sector.

A Nigerian woman has sparked widespread discussion after calling out school owners over the extremely low salaries being offered to teachers, warning that the situation could lead to a serious crisis in the education sector.

She expressed concern that many schools are currently looking for staff but are unwilling to offer reasonable pay, making it difficult for qualified individuals to accept or remain in teaching roles. According to her, some school owners approach her to help advertise job openings for teachers, but when she asks about the salary, she is often told figures as low as ₦25,000 for ND or HND holders, and even ₦15,000 for those with only SSCE qualifications.

She questioned how anyone could expect such offers to attract competent teachers, especially considering the current economic realities in the country. In her view, the low wages are discouraging many educators and pushing them away from the profession.

To further explain her point, she highlighted the imbalance between what schools earn and what teachers are paid. She noted that a teacher may handle a class of 20 or more students, each paying around ₦20,000 in fees, yet the teacher’s salary may not even equal the total fees of one or two students. She described this as unfair and unsustainable.

She warned that if the issue is not addressed, teaching may become an unattractive career path, leading to a shortage of educators in the near future. Her comments have triggered strong reactions online, with many agreeing that paying teachers such low salaries in today’s economy is unreasonable.

The discussion has since grown, with several people calling for urgent reforms and better welfare for teachers to prevent a decline in the quality and availability of education.
