Students of the University of Cross River protested in Calabar after a fatal accident, blaming poor conditions at General Hospital Calabar for the deaths of three colleagues and demanding better healthcare services.

Students of the University of Cross River took to the streets in Calabar to protest what they described as poor medical conditions that allegedly contributed to the deaths of three of their fellow students. The protest reflected growing anger and frustration over the state of healthcare services available to students in emergency situations.
The tragic incident that sparked the protest occurred along the Calabar-Itu Highway on Friday, when a bus carrying the students collided head-on with a truck. The victims were returning from a football match at the University of Uyo in Akwa Ibom State when the accident happened. The crash resulted in the immediate death of the driver, while three students later died from injuries they sustained.
Following the incident, many students claimed that the condition of the General Hospital Calabar worsened the situation. They alleged that inadequate facilities, poor emergency response, and lack of proper medical equipment contributed to the loss of lives. These concerns fueled the protest, as students demanded better healthcare services and accountability from authorities.
During the demonstration, protesters carried placards with messages criticizing the hospital and calling for urgent reforms in the healthcare system. What began as a peaceful protest, however, escalated into chaos when some students reportedly attacked hospital personnel and damaged parts of the facility out of anger.
As tensions rose, the students attempted to extend their protest to the state government office to press their demands further. This move was halted when security operatives, including the police, arrived at the scene and dispersed the crowd to restore order.
The incident has since drawn attention to the need for improved emergency medical care and better infrastructure in public hospitals, especially in situations involving critical injuries, as students continue to call for justice and systemic change.
